Reporte Ciudadano

First Citizen Journalism Platform in Nicaragua

As Web 2.0 technologies emerged in 2011, independent media outlet Confidencial needed to harness new information and communication technologies to enhance journalism while building local reporting capacity across Nicaragua’s communities. The presented an opportunity to implement a civic and participatory approach to national journalism, combining technological innovation with community capacity building to democratize news reporting.

As the project coordinator, I led a multidisciplinary effort that spanned platform development, content management, and digital literacy training. I oversaw the technical implementation while designing and delivering a series training session to immerse interested citizens into journalism fundamentals and best practices for digital skills.

The project began in January 2011 with the platform launching in March and running through November, during which there was active community participation. As web technologies evolved, the platform was later integrated as a section into main Confidencial’s website, where it continues to operate today. This initiative pioneered the use of emerging Web 2.0 tools for grassroots journalism in Central America.

This project demonstrates the early adoption of collaborative web technologies for civic engagement and represents pioneering work in digital journalism.
