Reporte Ciudadano

First Citizen Journalism Platform in Nicaragua

Challenge

As Web 2.0 technologies emerged in 2011, independent media outlet Confidencial needed to harness new information and communication technologies possibilities for journalism while building local reporting capacity across Nicaragua’s communities. The opportunity arose to carry out the idea and contribute to national journalism from a civic and participatory approach, combining technology innovation with community capacity building to democratize news reporting.

Approach

As project coordinator, I led a multidisciplinary effort spanning platform development, content management, and digital literacy training. I oversaw the technical implementation while designing and delivering a series training session to immersed interested citizens into journalism fundamentals and digital skills best practices.

As web technologies evolved, the platform was later integrated as a section into main Confidencial’s website, where it continues operating today. Pioneered the use of emerging Web 2.0 tools for grassroots journalism in Central America.

This project demonstrates early adoption of collaborative web technologies for civic engagement and represents pioneering work in Latin American digital journalism.
